THE ORCHID WORLD IS CHANGING... The day of the large orchid firms that provide hobby growers with a diverse variety of orchids and the supplies to grow them is in decline. Energy costs for heating, cooling, and maintaining large greenhouse ranges are prohibitive. Consequently, we are seeing the rise of smaller more specialized companies that focus on certain genera. Woodstream Orchids is one of a handful of United States companies that specialize in breeding and producing Paphiopedilum and Phragmipediums. When you are buying Paphs and Phrags from us there is a very good chance they originated in our breeding program and represent our unique scientific and artist approach to breeding and production. We continue to select and add elite breeding stock in both these genera and are excited by the potential we see on our benches in thousands of unbloomed seedlings. No doubt we will select some terrific new plants for future breeding. We also offer the same unbloomed (but not currently in bud) blooming size seedlings to our customers. We routinely receive beautiful images of plants that have bloomed for others that originated here with us. Nothing could please us more!
Summer heat arrived early this year with 20 90+F days in June. However, also arriving in June were our new Aluminet shade cloth and new upgraded evaporative cooling system. Last week when we hit 100+F, the greenhouse interior did not go above 87F. XCLNT! The Paphs and Phrags are loving it, putting on new growth spurts. Dozens of new crosses are now in compot, and life looks good!
We have updated our offerings of select divisions of our breeding and show plants. We have a new web page dedicated to these offerings. This page was updated July 5, 2010 and includes Paphs, Phrags, and other genera. We will continue to add new divisions to the list as we repot our show and breeding plants, and the divisions become established. See the link on our PAPA AROHA PAPHS page!

MANY NEW FLASKS and PAPH AND PHRAG SEEDLINGS and SELECT DIVISIONS are continuously being added to our web site offerings. Some of the flasks and seedlings are limited in number. It is likely that some of the best crosses will have been sold out by the time plants begin to bloom and receive awards.

SHIPPING - Most orders will be shipped within two weeks of receiving the order, when plants are in stock and payment and shipping information is provided, weather permitting.. IF YOU WILL BE AWAY, PLEASE LET US KNOW SO WE DO NOT SHIP WHEN THERE IS NO ONE TO RECEIVE YOUR PLANTS. We recommend that you provide an address where someone will be available to receive the plants so they do not sit outside. Shipping may be delayed during the busy show months of February, March, April, June, October, and November.
COST OF SHIPPING We raised our shipping rates to match the increases forced on us by the US Postal Service and Fedex. Orders under $100 shipped via Priority Mail will be $15. Minimum shipping cost for orders over $100 is $15 for Priority Mail Service. Express Mail and Fedex Service will be charged at cost, plus a $5 surcharge to cover shipping supplies and packing. Shipments to the west coast will be more expensive. Especially large boxes are being charged balloon rates, and that may mean a $20 (or more) surcharge on a box of large growing plants. We regret having to pass on these expenses to you. It is not our goal to make money on shipping, but we are unwilling to lose money, either.
Woodstream Orchids (WSO) opened our Maryland nursery to the public for the first time on May 26, 2001 after over 10 years in Bucks County, Pennsylvania! WSO is now open by appointment Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Many people express a desire to visit our nursery, and we request that you e-mail or call first, to ensure the nursery will be open. Woodstream Orchids is located in Huntingtown in southeastern Maryland's beautiful Calvert County, between the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay, approximately 30 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. and 24 miles south of Annapolis. Here are some approximate driving times from: Washington, DC Beltway (495) and Route 4 - 30 minutes; Reagan National Airport - 50 minutes; Silver Spring, MD - 55 minutes; Baltimore-Washington International Airport - 45 minutes; Baltimore, MD - 1 hour; Dulles International Airport - 1.5 hours; Richmond, VA - 2 hours; Philadelphia, PA - 3 hours; Pittsburgh, PA - 4 hours; New York, NY - 4.5 hours; Denver, CO - ~40 hours.
