Maxillaria is a large and diverse genus ranging from miniature to large plants. They enjoy moderately bright light, intermediate (generally) temperatures, good humidity and air movement. They grow well in plastic pots with moss or a seedling bark (Paph) mix. According to Dr. Robert Dressler, there are 117 species of Maxillaria found in Panama.

Maxillaria

Maxillaria amparoana - (Panama) Compact plant with small pseudobulbs. Intermediate, moderate-moderately bright. Red or yellow flowers.

Maxillaria ampliflora - (Panama) Large upright plant produces clusters of beautiful 1.5 inch full white flowers edged with purple. Grow cool-intermediate (comes from ~6,000-7,000 feet elevation, with moderate light, evenly moist. Very limited.

Maxillaria angustisegmenta - (Panama) Beautiful plants and flowers! Large showy flowers with white sepals, yellow petals and lip with purple lines; produced individually from base of pseudobulbs on 4-5" stems. Grow intermediate with moderate-moderately bright light.

Maxillaria angustissima - (Panama) Excellent miniature with white flowers. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist. Very limited.

Maxillaria arachnitiflora - (Panama) Striking large cream-yellow spider-like flowers on compact plants . Grow intermediate, with moderate-moderately bright light.

Maxillaria arachnitiflora var. nanum - (Panama) Amazing dwarf version of the popular Max. arachnitiflora. Virtually one-third the size. White flowers with a yellow lip. Could be a new species. A must have for your favorite Max-fanatic! Grow intermediate, with moderate-moderately bright light. Very limited.

Maxillaria bradeorum - (Panama) Large upright plant, similar to Max. amplifora, produces clusters of beautiful 1.5 inch full white flowers edged with purple. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist. Very limited.

Maxillaria ctenostachya - (Panama) Clusters of 1.5" pale yellow fragrant blooms. Grow intermediate, with moderately bright light.

Maxillaria ecuadorense (may be longissima) - (Colombia, Ecuador) Very large, dark spider-like flowers, produced individually from base of pseudobulbs on 4-5" stems. Grow intermediate with moderate-moderately bright light.

Maxillaria endresii - (Panama) Fragrant. Yellow flowers, yellow lip with purple lines. Dr. John Atwood of Selby Gardens claimed this species had the finest fragrance of any orchid he knew (and he has known quite a few)!! Grow warm-intermediate, moderate-moderately bright, evenly moist. Very rare! Very limited.

Maxillaria exaltata - (Panama) Tall-growing species produces numerous 1-2" white-cream single flowers with reddish lips, produced in clusters. Grow intermediate with moderately bright light. Very rare!

Maxillaria fletcheriana - (Ecuador) One of our favorite species. Large white flowers have distinctive white and yellow tuberculate lip. Great show plant! Grow intermediate with moderately bright light.

Maxillaria hirtzii - (Ecuador) Rarely seen in cultivation, cool side of intermediate. Large non resupinate white flowes. An excellent species.

Maxillaria horichii - (Panama) This species is quite similar to neglecta and pseudoneglecta, having small pseudobulbs separated by several inches, along a narrow rhizome, giving a cascade effect. Dense clusters of bright orange flowers appear several times a year. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria irrorata - (Ecuador) Divisions of our stock plant. Nodding white and yellow flowers heavily spotted with red-purple. Grow intermediate, with moderately bright light, evenly moist. Rare!

Maxillaria lepidota - (Ecuador) Wonderful florierous compact species with creamy yellow blooms. We were excited to receive these! Grow intermediate-cool, with moderately bright light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria nutans - (Ecuador) Divisions of our stock plant. White flowers. Grow intermediate-cool, with moderately bright light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria olmosii - (Panama) Very recently described species, named for MTF's Erik Olmos. Flowers are dark red, and appear singly, or in small clusters from leaf axils along the tall slender stem. Unusual growth habit. Grow intermediate, with moderately bright light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria paleata (syn. Maxillaria wrightii) - (Panama) Beautiful 10" upright growth yields dark red flowers up and down the stem. Blooms frequently. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria ponerantha 'Woodstream' CHM/AOS - (Panama) Tiny plants with black flowers! Excellent! Resembles a miniature Maxillaria variabilis. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria pseudoneglecta - (Panama) Orange. Similar to Maxillaria horichii. Beautiful plants!

Maxillaria reichenheimiana - (Panama) Lovely cream white flowers accent the dark green foliage with silvery spots. This is a charming and rewarding species that is easy to grow and remains compact. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist, with good humidity.

Maxillaria rodrigueziana - (Panama) Quite rare and spectacular species with huge 6+" creamwhite spidery blooms on compact plants! Excellent! Grow intermediate, with moderate-moderately bright light.

Maxillaria sanguinea - (Panama) Resembles a dwarf Maxillaria tenuifolia with small tightly clustered pseudobulbs and fine grass-like leaves. White flowers have brilliant dark red lip with maroon callus and are fragrant. Grow warm-intermediate, with moderately bright light.

Maxillaria scalariformis (sold previously as escalariformis) - (Panama) Recently described species, and one of our favorites. Tall upright growth. Several annual flushes of red-pink flowers occur at nodes throughout the plant. The effect is truly sensational! Grow intermediate-cool with near even moisture and moderately bright light. Very rare and very limited.

Maxillaria striata 'Mem. Betty Maduro' AM/AOS - (Ecuador) Beautiful large flowers. We had our stock plant in bloom as a sample plant in our sales area at a show and caused a sensation! We are now offering a few nice divisions! Grow intermediate, with moderately bright light.

Maxillaria strumata - (Panama) Attractive repent miniature with bright white flowers. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria aff. strumata - (Panama) Attractive repent miniature with bright small cream flowers heavily dappled with red. Cute! May be a new species. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria tigrina (formerly Chrysocycnis tigrina) - (Panama) Dark-striped yellow-orange flowers. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist. Very limited.

Maxillaria triloris - (Ecuador) Grow intermediate-cool, with moderately bright light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria uncata - (Panama) Very cute miniature. Creeping pin-cushion growth and white flowers.

Maxillaria valenzuelana - (Panama) Amazing species that looks like a gigantic tetraploid Ornithocephalus, because of its fan-like foliage. Fans reach 8-12" across! Small yellow flowers appear regularly at the base of the foliage. Very decorative!

Maxillaria valeroi - (Panama) Wonderfully fragrant species with fan-like growths and white flowers. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria variabilis - (Panama) Popular fragrant compact spcies with small yellow and red flowers. Very easy to grow and bloom. Grow intermediate, with moderate light, evenly moist.

Maxillaria werckelii - (Panama) Relatively rare species with growth habit similar to Maxillaria variabilis. Flowers are yellow-gold with bergundy striped lip. Grow intermediate, with moderate light.
