LONG-PETAL MULTIFLORA PHRAGMIPEDIUM HYBRIDS (PHRAG CAUDATUM-INFLUENCE) |
|
May 11, 2008
Among the most popular of all Phragmipediums, the long-petal multiflora hybrids derived from Phragmipedium caudatum, wallisii, warscewiczianum and exstaminodium are easy to grow and bloom. The spectacular multiflora (3-4 flowers open at once on an inflorescence) make them terrific show plants. While Phragmipedim Grande is still ever-popular, there are many variations on the theme. Woodstream Orchids has been exploring new genetic combinations to bring you new looks, new colors, and compact growth habits. The future remains excting for this wonderful group of Phragmipediums! Note: Please check the species, triploid, and tetraploid hybrid pages for other multiflora Phrag offerings.
Court Jester (caudatum 'Windy Hill' CCM/AOS x boisserianum 'Green Ripples' - Beautiful green multiflora with long dark brown petals.
Evy Finegan [3N] (Grande [4N] x caricinum 'Aileen' AM/AOS) - A remake of an original WSO cross (named for Bill's sister) using a huge [4N] Grande. The caricinum will dramatically reduce the plant size, and we expect exciting medium-size green-brown flowers with moderately long red petals. Very vigorous.
WSO 1772 Extra Rich (richteri 'Lil' x exstaminodium) 'Extra Handsome' - Phrag exstaminodium is a remarkable and rare relative of warscewcizii found in southern Mexico. This species usually produces a pair of very beautiful dark flowers with long petals, that are wider than caudatum and the other long petal species. We have paired it with a lovely green Phrag richteri from the late Lil Severin's collection. Very vigorous!
Fireworks 'April Fool' AM/AOS - (Grande x pearcei) Wonderful awarded clone! Everyone should have this plant! Very limited.
WSO 2572 Fireworks 'April Fool' AM/AOS x Grande (4N) 'Woodstream's Giant' - Huge dark long-petal flowers!
WSO 1530 Grande (longifolium 'Woodstream' AM/AOS x
caudatum 'Woodstream's Winter Garden') - Classic multiflora Phrag hybrid has gained great popularity
due to its beautiful flowers with long petals and its ease of culture. Remade with superior parents.
WSO 1940 Grande (4N) Grande (4N) ('Woodstream's Giant' x self) - The parent plant has HUGE flowers with long petals, good color and fine form. Visitors to our greenhouse never fail to comment on this plant when it is in bloom. Despite the size of the flower, the plant size is no greater than the typical Grandes we grow.
Grande 'Acker's Vista' AM/AOS - A pale clone that has more than earned our adimiration. Long petals. A differnt look!
Grande 'Macrochilum' AM/AOS - Wonderful awarded clone! Everyone should have this plant! Divisions of our CCE/AOS plant!
Grande 'Nancy' AM/AOS - Wonderful awarded clone! Everyone should have this plant!
Mont Fallu [4N](Grande [4N] x longifolium [4N]) - Expect giant flowers with moderately long
petals, produced 2-3 at a time. Previous makes have produced outstanding results.
WSO 2598 Nitidissimum 'Neville' FCC/AOS x Grande (4N) 'Woodstream's Giant' - Huge dark long-petal flowers! Stunning!
WSO 1060 Penns Creek Cascade [3N] (Grande 'Woodstream's Giant' [4N] x wallisii 'Tower Grove' HCC/AOS) - Fast-growing long-petaled multiflora Phrag hybrid! This Woodstream cross targets beautiful large flowers in pale green, with contrasting white pouch interior and very long petals, on relatively compact plants. Both parents are exquisite!
